Home interior colour predictions for 2026: Part one
Each year we see new colour and design trends enter the world of home design. To help us navigate what to expect in 2026 and learn how to incorporate these trends in your home, we look to two of our wonderful stylists over the next two weeks. This week we speak to Megan Harrison Turner.
“Colours I have noticed coming through are either dark and close to black or at the other end of the spectrum with a subtle use of pigment to give washed delicate hues,” says Megan.
“There are two exceptions to the pales and darks. That is a handful of greens like moss and forest tones that sit in the midtones – Resene Bitter, Woodland, Half Forest Green and Gecko.”

“And all things indigo. The indigos run the length of the colour range from the deep inky shades of Resene Carpe Noctem and Dark Slate to the well-worn washed out Half Breathless and Half Dusted Blue and many shades in between.”

“Enigmatic rosewoods – warm browns with a touch of pink – have soft amounts of pigment and look great with white furniture, window surrounds and skirtings to frame the colour and the space.”
Think shades like Resene Cashmere and Tom Tom which Megan says pair wonderfully with organic blacks like Resene Zeus and Bokara Grey and are a modern updated take on the taupes and greyed browns that have been popular in recent years.

“Smokey blues – greyed, soft, delicate. These colours work well with existing neutrals and greys,” Megan says. “As well as the softest sage greens, some touched with blue keeping the duck egg colours relevant.” Try Resene Mischka, Neutral Bay, Resene Terrain and Tasman. These colours are also close enough to neutrals and can be used on walls and larger spaces without feeling overwhelming. Use them in bedrooms, bathrooms, living rooms and kitchens for a timeless look that still injects just the right amount of colour.

“Chalky raspberries and plums – aged, muted, faded grandeur colours that are totally fresh and new.” Megan says these shades look great as a backdrop to art, neutral kitchens in black or white as well as in transitional spaces like hallways and stairwells. Think Resene Alluring, Soothe, Vintage and Innuendo.

Lastly, Megan says that black walls still have a place, but they have softened from sharper manmade pigments to more organic pigments with a brown cast, almost like black chocolate. Look to Resene Element, Monkey, Dark Chocolate and Sepia.

Let’s take a look at three rooms using some of these trending colours so you can see them in action:

In this living space, neutral furniture and décor create a welcoming space and contrast against the walls painted in a soft sage green, Resene Vantage Point. The ceiling and trims are painted in Black White. Project by City Style co, image by Harcourts Holmwood.

Here, the warm, pinky browns of rosewood envelope this bedroom making it a warm and welcoming space. The wall is painted in Resene Bleach White with brushstroke texture in Resene FX Paint Effects Medium mixed with Cashmere. Floor in Dover White, trims in Bleach White, headboard in Caffeine, table in Tom Tom, vases in Karry, Cashmere and Dover White. Bedding from H&M Home. If black hues are your thing, look to a slightly more trending tone of deep earthy browns. You can also add some texture to your space by finding these hues in your favourite wallpaper design. In this space, Resene Mata Hari Wallpaper Collection AS382035 pairs beautifully with the warm wood, gold accents and Resene Jimmy Dean hues on furniture.

Find your delicate, greyed blues in a design like Resene Eden Wallpaper Collection M296-01. Bring out this tone by painting surrounding walls in a similar hue like Resene Casper. Add some natural materials and you’ve got a calming space that’s grounded in nature.
