Liam’s Cambridge bungalow has been transformed by a light and earthy palette

Having completed a number of renovations in Auckland with his DIY-savvy parents, Liam was more than ready for the challenge of tackling the 1987 Cambridge bungalow he purchased in 2018. The idea of renovating in his hometown was an appealing one, but it wasn’t going to be any small feat. While the bones of the house and the layout were favourable, Liam soon realised it would be a full-on renovation project with complete colour update in a contemporary Resene palette.

“I don’t think there is an inch of this property inside or out that we haven’t touched. What started as a renovation focused on refreshing the colours and bathroom turned into a bigger project, including the kitchen and flooring,” Liam shares.

The renovation took place over several months over the weekends with Liam and his parents doing most of the work themselves, save for the electrical, plumbing and flooring installation. After gutting the interior, Liam worked with his friend and interior designer, Matt South, to create a plan for how the new spaces would come together. Since he enjoyed the natural greenery and park space that surrounded the house, Liam wanted to create a warm, earthy and natural home to complement it, from the paint colours through to the soft furnishings.

Choosing colours for the interior proved to be a big challenge, especially after walls were removed to create more breathing space in what was previously a little too cosy for comfort. Liam also had the battle of stripping some particularly stubborn wallpaper and plenty of remedial wall prep and plastering to get the walls that were staying into paint-ready condition. Liam eventually opted for a palette of minimalistic Resene whites and greys to open up each space and provide a sense of flow.

Liam’s open plan living, kitchen and dining room looks spacious and inviting with walls, ceilings and trims in Resene Double Alabaster. Green accents like the artwork, cushion and natural details, such as the plants and light timber furniture, provide a link between the interior and the surrounding park space outside.

Light floods Liam’s kitchen, which feels much more open thanks to a new layout with walls, the window sill and ceiling painted in Resene Double Alabaster.

Resene Taupe Grey was chosen for the doors to complement the natural, earthy flooring while Resene Double Alabaster became a mainstay throughout the house across walls, ceilings and skirting boards. “The result of the interior colour choices is a light, airy space which feels restful and links well to the park views,” Liam says.

Walls, ceilings and trims in Resene Double Alabaster create a sense of levity in Liam’s restful looking master bedroom. The door is painted in Resene Taupe Grey, which plays off of the room’s soft furnishings and accessories.

Liam’s next great challenge came with the exterior. It too was in need of a refresh, but he had to choose tones that would work with the orange brick – a feature he wasn’t too keen on. For the exterior flashing, fences and garage door, Liam opted for Resene Bokara Grey paired with Resene Merino on the entrance pillars and walls surrounding the entryway. “I really love how the simplified colour palette turned the orange bricks from something I didn’t really like to something people always comment on,” Liam shares.

To get each surface looking tip top, Liam turned to his local Resene team. Durable Resene Walk-on tinted to Resene Stonehenge was used to clean up the patio. The front door was painted in Resene Super Gloss enamel tinted to Resene Nero to give it some added shine, while the garage door was painted in Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss waterborne enamel tinted to to Resene Bokara Grey.

Liam advises anyone going for a quality finish to not underestimate the amount of work it takes. “Putting effort into the prep work with things like the wallpaper stripping, GIB© plasterboard stopping, filling, sanding and undercoating all helped to achieve a really great topcoat finish,” he says.

Despite the massive efforts and hours put in, Liam is rightfully proud of the results and looks back on the project as a rewarding experience.

“Overall it was important to me to make a bit of a statement on the outside with a warm, welcoming and well-designed interior. I’m very happy with the way it’s turned out.”
