A colonial home with a modern twist
The past and present converge effortlessly in this colonial-inspired home. The home’s muted palette draws directly from nature, showcasing Resene’s versatile shades to create a tranquil atmosphere.
Interior designer Georgie Inglis from Kirkcaldie has artfully reimagined this self-contained home, blending soft, garden-inspired greens with timeless neutral shades. At the heart of this charming space is the kitchen, where a contemporary take on the classic shaker style takes centre stage.
Painted in Resene Quarter Grey Olive, the cabinetry exudes sophistication, seamlessly merging with antique brass hardware and rich oak floorboards. This calming green shade echoes the surrounding oak trees and garden views, pulling the outdoors inside. The marble countertops add warmth and texture, grounding the space with their natural appeal, while panel details pay homage to the home’s colonial roots, adding depth and character to the design.
In the kitchen and dining space, the rich brown and earthy hues pair well with Resene Quarter Grey Olive on cabinetry. The ceiling in Resene Half Rice Cake brightens the space.
The floor to ceiling cabinetry gives the illusion of extra height and space in the kitchen. Resene Quarter Grey Olive on cabinetry pairs well with the timber floors and ceiling in Resene Half Rice Cake.
The journey to transform this space was not without challenges. Originally a garage, the space was repurposed into a self-contained unit, with structural walls, plumbing constraints and varying floor levels dictating many design choices. The low kitchen ceiling required creative solutions. Georgie maximised the sense of space by extending the cabinetry up to the ceiling, creating an illusion of height. Painting skirting and coving in the same hue as the walls further enhanced this effect, as did the strategic use of light tones from the Resene palette.
Resene Quarter Grey Olive carries through into the bedroom creating a harmonious space. The wall panelling adds to the rooms classic charm and the ceiling and trims in Resene Half Rice Cake add a neutral touch to each space.
The open plan living and bedroom area are adorned in the same beige toned green, Resene Quarter Grey Olive, creating a peaceful space that connects to the nature outside.
The palette flows effortlessly from the kitchen into the open plan living and bedroom areas, where Georgie chose earthy neutrals and soft green tones to create a serene backdrop. Resene Half Rice Cake adorns window trims, doors and architraves in a soft, warm white that complements Resene Quarter Grey Olive. This subtle contrast highlights the home’s architectural details, celebrating the colonial theme while introducing a contemporary touch. The light tones also play a practical role, visually expanding the space and enhancing its sense of height and openness.
Every corner of the home has been thoughtfully curated, with a blend of art pieces – paintings, sculptures and photographs – that reflect the homeowner’s love for creativity. Each artwork, carefully selected by Georgie, serves as a unique conversation starter and adds to the home’s layered, collected aesthetic. Large windows also allow natural light to stream into the rooms, showcasing the beauty of the colour palette and highlighting the lush gardens outside.
The homeowner’s personal artwork and charming décor is complemented by the gentle hue of Resene Quarter Grey Olive.
The living room carries a classic colonial style while the timeless hues of Resene Quarter Grey Olive and Resene Half Rice Cake bring a modern touch to the space.
This colonial-inspired home, with its modern colour palette, presents an inspired vision of timeless elegance and contemporary comfort. Georgie’s selection of Resene Quarter Grey Olive and Resene Half Rice Cake celebrates both the natural beauty of the garden and the timeless grace of colonial design, creating a retreat that is both refined and deeply welcoming.
