A splash of colour at Porritt Park: Thames' vibrant playground

31 Jul 2024

In the heart of Thames, Porritt Park has recently transformed into a vivid oasis of fun and creativity. The new playground, officially opened on May 30th, is a testament to community spirit, innovative design and the unparalleled hues of Resene paints.

The playground’s design revolves around a captivating Nature Trail, utilising poles and logs to create an engaging pathway for children. This trail, which winds from one side of the park to the other, includes a stilt walkway that adds an element of adventure and challenge for young explorers.

Local artist Ricky Fisher of Ngāti Maru brought the playground to life with his imaginative design for the wet pour areas under the play equipment. To enhance these artistic elements, Nikky Fisher, a trusted consultant, suggested using the vibrant Michael Smithers 'Siren' colours. This palette, known for its striking and radiant hues, was previously used to great effect in other Thames projects like Jacobs Ladder, the fence fronting the Beach Road Croquet Courts and the Moanataiari Walkway.

The chosen colours for the playground were Resene Bright Red, Resene Grenadier, Resene Pizazz, Resene Yellow Sea, Resene Broom, Resene Bahia, Resene Wham, Resene Observatory, ReseneLochmara, Resene Jacksons Purple, Resene Kingfisher Daisy and Resene Geronimo. These hues combine to form the stunning Sirencolour scheme. Each shade adds a burst of energy and excitement, creating an inviting and stimulating environment for children and families.

The grand opening of the playground was a resounding success. On the day of the opening, the playground was filled with excited children and adults from 3pm until late into the evening, thanks to the park's thoughtful lighting. The vibrant colours and engaging design elements have made the playground a popular destination, with the buzz continuing for days afterward.

The next phase of the project focuses on fundraising for accessible toilets, which will be installed next to the existing facilities. This addition will ensure that the playground is inclusive and welcoming for all.

The new playground at Porritt Park is more than just a play area – it's a vibrant, artistic expression of community collaboration and creative design. Thanks to the stunning colours and the efforts of talented local artists and designers, the playground stands as a beacon of joy and inspiration for the Thames community.
