Wild designs for Wild Things

24 Jul 2024

Artist Justine McAllister has been busy and her recent mural for Wild Things grocer in Victoria has brightened not only the store but the whole street! Using an array of vibrant Resene colours, she has created a fantastic mural for the exterior of the store that perfectly reflects the produce sold within.

Wild Things is a local Fitzroy North organic grocer and is all about sourcing fresh, organic product from local farmers and artisan producers. Justine was asked to undertake this project based on a much-loved mural she had completed for the wholesale Melbourne Markets in Epping. The artwork is a visual commitment to the store’s organic goods through friendly, approachable and helpful customer service. The mural is literally about judging the book – in this case a store – by the cover.

Justine’s mural is painted with shades Resene Broom, Resene Di Serria, Resene Melting Moment, Resene Norway, Resene Outrageous, Resene Pioneer Red,Resene Red Pepper, Resene Rich Gold, Resene Sunshade, Resene Supernova, Resene Tom Thumb, Resene Vesuvius and Resene White. Image by Holly Hawkins.

The colours requested were inspired by a vibrant ‘autumn’ palette that was bold enough to be seen from across the street but still earthy and natural to reflect the business. The artwork is a drastic transformation from the aged white brick wall that was previously in its place.

Walking past Wild Things, you’ll notice many playful and creative graphics on Justine’s mural, sure to put a smile on your face. Images by Holly Hawkins.

The owners of Wild Things were searching for seven years to find the right artist to collaborate with for their facade. After seeing the mural at the Epping wholesale markets, they got in contact with Justine inviting her to create an artwork on the façade celebrating the organic produce and products they sell.
