Glen and Sara embrace traditional style

Having had a been-there, done-that moment of building a "very modern" house, Glen and Sara were ready to settle into something a little more traditional for their next build. This home ticks all the boxes – a mix of villa and French Country living, with old clay bricks, shuttered windows, wide architraves, and a palette of dreamy Resene neutrals.

Sara tells us more.

How did you decide on the overall look of the interiors? What was your overall philosophy?

We wanted our home to feel timeless and elegant and solid. The previous home we had built was very modern – huge expanses of polished concrete, steel, glass etc – and we wanted something that felt more traditional, ‘homely’ and comfortable.

What part of the house are you happiest with?

We love the feel of the kitchen/family/dining area with its high raked ceilings.

The old clay-brick wall between the dining and entrance is a favourite feature.

We’re also really happy with the whole look of the exterior – love the paint colour, the veranda and fretwork, and the leadlight door.

What was the biggest decorating, renovating or building challenge for this project?

The exterior cladding. We originally wanted to use old recycled clay bricks for the exterior (painted) but council wouldn’t allow this.

We changed to rusticated timber weatherboards, but the footings had already been laid to allow for a brick-width wall.

We had to compromise with new bricks for the lower portion and weatherboards for the rest (and plans had to be redrawn as a result).

Although it added extra cost and time to the build we completely love the final look and are very glad we ended up with this!

Do you have a favourite colour?

Resene Blanched Pink is just gorgeous. I’m glad we have little girls so we had an excuse to use this!

We also love Resene Edward, which we used for the exterior. We were a bit scared about using this initially as it’s a definite departure from the usual beige/grey/cream exteriors around here, but glad we did.

How did you find working with Resene paint and colours?

Great. We used Resene paint on our previous build too and have been very happy with it.

Is there anyone you would like mentioned in the article?

We like to thank Ja.Co Builders, interior designer Twill Interiors and Seaform Kitchens and Joinery.

Sara didn’t want anything too saccharine for her daughters Inara and Amira's bedroom. She chose Resene Blanched Pink, describing it as a beautiful, subtle and almost grown-up pink.
