Inside a dreamy modern farmhouse

Nestled on a farm in Waikato, there's so much to love about the Scott family's home... from its contemporary meets classic farmhouse vibe, to the beautiful palette, painted in a mix of Resene grey, white and blue.

At the heart is the living area (kitchen, lounge, dining room), an expansive space with striking timber ceiling trusses and tawa floor, both milled from the farm. Resene Tuna is a strong feature on the cabinetry in the kitchen, along with an elegant marble splashback that was a must-have for the owners.

Another talking point is the ensuite, where a partition wall of large board and batten squares painted in Resene Silver Chalice gives it a sanctuary-like presence, offset by soft Resene Powder Blue on the walls.

The rest of the house continues the colour scheme, creating a lovely, easy flow and timeless quality throughout... a modern farmhouse, indeed. The homeowners tell us more about the project.

How did you decide on the overall look of the interiors?

The style we were trying to achieve is a homely, country estate with a timeless and easy-living flow. I had a scrapbook and would rip pages out of magazines. I found that I had a theme that I tended towards (including colours). So once I saw that theme coming through, over and over again, we just ran with it.

What part of the house are you most happy with?

All of it! We are happy to be in, and love the family and social aspects of the house. We also love having friends and family to entertain around the kitchen or pool.

What was the biggest challenge for this project?

We milled our own wood. This proved to be the most rewarding and the most challenging aspect to the project. We love the final result though... it’s very special to us.

Do you have a favourite colour?

I don't have a favourite colour, however I do love the contrast of the different greys alongside the wood and stone with the white accents in the trims, doors, ceilings, etc.

How did you find working with Resene paint and colours?

Loved all the colour choices!

Is there anyone you would like to mention?

The whole team who worked on our house were amazing. Special mention to the builder Scott Cooper and Lee Turner from Turner Road Architecture. They all did a fantastic job.

At the heart of this modern farmhouse is the kitchen and living area, with a beautiful mix of Resene Silver Chalice on the walls and Resene Half Bianca on the trims and lower wall panels. Resene Tuna is a standout feature on the cabinetry.

The floors are made of tawa milled from the homeowners' farm, and lead out from the living area to the hallway. The colour palette of Resene Silver Chalice and Resene Half Bianca also continues throughout. On the cabinetry, bold Resene Tuna is unique to the kitchen area.

What's a farmhouse without a fireplace? The cosy lounge is also part of the open-plan living area, painted in Resene Silver Chalice and Resene Half Bianca.

The master bedroom lends itself to a more contemporary vibe, with hanging copper lights, statement bedding, and walls in Resene Silver Chalice and Resene Half Bianca.

The dreamy ensuite was built with a partition wall of large board and batten squares painted in Resene Silver Chalice, separating the bathtub from the shower and toilet to create a sanctuary-like presence. To finish, they painted the walls in Resene Powder Blue with Resene Half Bianca for the trims.

Hidden on the other side are the toilet, vanity and shower, against walls in Resene Powder Blue and trims in Resene Half Bianca.

In their son's bedroom, natural rimu walls – also milled from the farm – look extra rich and warm against the other walls painted in Resene Quarter Silver Chalice. The trims and ceiling are painted in Resene Half Bianca.

Resene Silver Chalice on the walls and Resene Half Bianca on the trims make a great pairing in the guest room.

The homeowners chose Resene Delta for the exterior of their modern farmhouse, with Resene Grey Friar for the roof, and Resene Half Bianca for the soffits and joinery.
