Jackie and Jeremy’s stunning upcycled bach

Just one year ago, Jackie Jones and Jeremy Patston took over a dark, small timber-lined bach at Matarangi on the Coromandel. Today, it’s unrecognizable, thanks to Jackie’s skill as an interior designer and lots of hard work by this family of seven.

Now painted in Resene Half Sea Fog with a stunning striped feature wall in the dining area, the bach is the family’s new, much-used beach retreat.

Jackie tells us more about the transformation:

Tell us about the bach and what you decided to do to it?

The house is a simple 16-year-old Initial Home which we wanted to become a relaxed, coastal beach escape. Because it is small (70sq m) with two bedrooms, a coherent feel was very important. The seven colours in the dining area’s striped feature wall recur in accents throughout the bach – Resene Jet Stream, Resene Carefree, Resene Cut Glass, Resene Half Sea Fog, Resene Nebula, Resene Longitude and Resene Dusted Blue.

The number of boards dictated the number of colours. We sat back with 10-12 colour options on A4 brushouts and over a glass of wine, we soon had it narrowed down.

We wanted to retain the home’s bachy feel rather than making everything brand new. The kitchen remains largely untouched; we simply added new handles to the cabinetry, painted the walls and added the two floating shelves.

Once we had the inside painted, we did the outside cladding in eighth Resene Grey Friars (specially mixed for us), with the fascias in Resene Half Grey Friars, the deck screen in Resene Woodsman Silvered Grey and the fences in Resene Woodsman Woody Bay.

What part of the design are you happiest with?

The striped wall is one of my favourite elements. It’s a real focal point to the whole bach.

I feel very satisfied with how well we have accommodated our family of seven into a two-bedroom bach. For inside dining, the breakfast bar seats three and the table four, the living area seats all of us on two sofas and the sea urchin style poufs. The indoor/outdoor beanbags add extra seating when needed. In summer, we live on the deck mostly anyway. We sleep four kids in the bunkroom, one on the sofa bed, and us in the main bedroom. It all works perfectly!

What was the biggest design challenge for this project?

The logistics of getting everything from Auckland to Matarangi on our relatively small trailer – 15-20 trips in all. Also scheduling the tradespeople we needed to lay flooring, fit new lights and install our dishwasher and outdoor shower to coincide with us being at the bach and all the painting being completed before this. When you live three hours away, you need a lot of forward planning!

What is your advice for someone trying to achieve a similar look? Painting the interior timber was an epic task, but absolutely worth the eight weekends of hard work that it took Jeremy and I to complete (see Resene’s method here).

Painting the walls Resene Half Sea Fog has made an incredible difference. What originally felt like quite a dark bach is now a fantastically light, bright space.
