From drab to fab: Julia and Jordan's edgy character home
Sun streams into the open plan kitchen and dining room of Julia and Jordan Rogers' home, hitting the bold Resene Quarter Fuscous Grey walls and beautiful ornate trims at the top. In a previous life, the Sydney character home was damp and drab – now it has an edgy and fresh feel to it, a perfect fit for the couple and their young family.
When the Rogers purchased the home a couple of years ago, Julia was about to enter maternity leave, with a toddler in tow. Located in Mosman on Sydney’s North Shore, part of the house was used as a chiropractic centre at the time, and it was hard to see the potential with all the furniture. They went ahead with the purchase anyway.
They wanted to freshen up the interior in a way that was in keeping with its 1900s Federation-style heritage. Sister-in-law Denise Barnett, of Yellow Cow Interiors, came on board and together they chose a colour scheme that honours the home’s real beauty.
The makeover started with the kitchen’s cabinetry using Resene Half Ash, a cool yet character neutral with a green edge. For the walls of the open-plan the kitchen and dining area, Denise chose Resene Quarter Fuscous Grey. As a crisp counterpoint, the trims and picture rails were painted in Resene Black White.
“We wanted dark colours for boldness,” says Denise. “I wanted everything cool and grey, and now you don’t even notice the flecks of yellow and orange in the floorboards.”
Resene Half Ash, a light and calming colour, extends to the hallway, baby Belle’s nursery and the study.
In son Oscar’s bedroom, the couple wanted to go bolder – they chose Resene Rhino, with a feature wall behind the fireplace in lighter blue Resene Neutral Bay. The fireplace itself is painted in Resene Black White, and a stripe of the same colour runs around the room... the whole effect is fun and playful, perfect for a little boy’s bedroom.
They didn’t just stop at the walls. Julia took to accessories in Belle’s room with Resene Always, a gentle pastel pink. In built cabinetry in the study was painted in Resene Gauntlet, bringing it to life and showing off its gorgeous metal handles.
Jordan admits that without Denise's help, “we wouldn’t have had the discipline to keep going and get all the pieces done without it."
Adds Julia: “I crammed a lot into maternity leave and Denise made it efficient. Her shortlist of furniture and colour options were amazing. It was a great range to pick from.”
Julia has a lot more DIY projects up her sleeve, and the couple plan to paint the exterior within the year... we can't wait to see what they have in store.
