Krissy and Stefan find their extraordinary balance

Homeowners Krissy and Stefan faced a very familiar story when it came to renovating their 1920s bungalow in the character-filled suburb of Westmere, Auckland. The house had great bones but the inside was looking tired and dark with little flow.

However, after working with designer Romé Smit from Buildology, the couple’s home is anything but ordinary, filled with open social spaces for entertaining, balanced with cozy nooks for relaxing.

Romé talks us through the design process.

What was your overall design philosophy?

To try and maintain the understated design characteristics of the bungalow, while bringing it to life with a classic, yet bold modern twist that wouldn’t date.

What was your overall design philosophy?

To try and maintain the understated design characteristics of the bungalow, while bringing it to life with a classic, yet bold modern twist that wouldn’t date.

What were the key features of the project that made it unique?

The high ceilings and large open spaces allowed more light to flow in and brighten up the space. This provided the perfect canvas for Krissy’s bold creative flare and colour preferences. Good results only come from amazing clients like Stefan and Krissy who have a playful nature. They were willing to try something different, while still having a sense of style.

What Resene colours were used?

The exterior weatherboard cladding is in Resene Athens Grey while the roof and vertical cladding are in Resene Element. All the window trims and frames, and doors, inside and out are Resene Half Alabaster, as are the interior ceilings and skirtings.

Inside, the feature wall in the living room is Resene Half Baltic Sea while the main bedroom is Resene Tangaroa. All the other interior walls are Resene Alabaster.

What part of the design are you most happy with?

I love the flow and connection between the open-plan spaces and the retractable deck. When the deck is tucked away, there is a cozy feel to the living area with the ambiance of the pool just below. When the deck is extended the large open space creates the perfect social platform while staying connected to the interior. The bold blue and grey palete is complemented by the blue of the pool and the bright green vegetation around the perimeter.

What was the biggest design challenge for this project?

The continuity between spaces. Having the modern open plan areas feel exciting and new but still having an air of formality to the master bedroom and the second living area in the original wing of the house.

Who else was involved in the project?

Zane and the team from Renovation Builders. Their eye for detail in the structure made it easier to have a high quality finish to the interior design and paintwork.

A key design feature of the house is the retractable deck, which can extend out over the pool to create an entertaining area. While the deck itself is in a pre-finished composite material, the steel structure underneath is protected with Resene Uracryl 403 Gloss.

The Resene Athens Grey exterior with Resene Half Alabaster trim looks fresh against the blue tones of the water and the glass hand rail, as well as the green planting.
