Come to the Coromandel: this first-prize Heart Foundation Lottery home is a piece of paradise

Nothing says a classic Kiwi holiday more than the Coromandel. And Resene paints bring shades of seashells and landscape to this gorgeous home in Cooks Beach, so every day feel like a long weekend. 

For its milestone 150th Heart Foundation Lottery, the Heart Foundation has chosen a very special place for the first-prize home.  

The lucky winner, to be drawn on Thursday October 3, can relish in the peace of small-town living, while still enjoying all the benefits and amenities of Whitianga. The larger town is less than an hour by road or a short trip across the water from Ferry Landing.

It’s this location’s perfect balance of serene seclusion and access to nearby facilities that made Liz Halpin, Lottery Operations Manager for the Heart Foundation, choose the spot. 

“The Coromandel has always been a popular region for holidaying,” she explains, “but over the past few years, we’ve seen lots of people choosing to move out here permanently. And why wouldn’t anyone want to live in one of New Zealand’s most beautiful areas?”  

The living area features Resene Sea Fog on most of the walls, with features walls in Resene Double Lemon Grass.

With iconic natural attractions such as Cathedral Cove, Hahei and Hot Water Beach just a 15-minute drive away, this home worth $1.25 million is certainly enviable. 

The team at Yellow Fox Tauranga created the colour palette using Resene paints.  Kate Voice, from The Furnishing Room, pulled it all together through the furnishings, bringing this coastal home to life.  She shares her process with us. 

What was your design brief? 

“Like all the Heart Foundation Lottery homes, my brief covered a broad field. The home needed to work for a variety of uses – a family home in which to raise children, a holiday home or somewhere to retire to and enjoy a quieter pace of life.”

What colours did you choose? 

“I chose calm greens, blues and neutrals in my furnishings. My aim was to create a peaceful atmosphere with a modern feel. It also feels right in the small beachside town, surrounded by farmland. The colours used in the home’s artwork adds excitement, energy and warmth to the space. 

“On the exterior of the home, Resene Double Sea Fog was used – a grey-toned white that is reminiscent of seashells along the beach. This colour was also brought into the home with furnishings to create a seamless flow, with Resene Double Sea Fog on the doors paired with Resene Sea Fog on most of the walls.  

“For select feature walls throughout the home, Resene Double Lemon Grass was chosen. It’s an earthy, muted green to bring a fresh, natural element inside. I think it was great using this on the wall in the entrance hallway so your first look inside the home is rich and colourful.”

What was your biggest challenge for this project? 

“It was a challenge to tie the colour palette in with the furnishings in a way that appeals to a wide range of possible owners. Especially as I wanted to keep the home feeling as if it belonged in this pretty beachside town, as well as be modern and homely.”  

What was your favourite aspect of the design? 

“Funnily enough, my favourite aspect of the design was the most challenging! I enjoyed bringing the colours together in a way that created a welcoming, homely family home while still being sophisticated and modern. I used the furnishings to achieve this and the artwork we selected brought it all together.”
