When it came to the back garden, landscape designer Margaret Chapman came to the rescue. The existing deck was used rather than rebuilt, and the exterior of the house was painted in Resene Gravel. A new pool was also installed, located so that it could be easily seen from inside the house.

Pete and Sarah bring vigour to 100-year-old villa

Thanks to its owners, age is just a number for this 100-year-old villa, which has been lovingly renovated with fresh Resene neutrals and a newly installed swimming pool.

When Pete and Sarah moved into the villa, it had already undergone a structural renovation. This allowed them to start making cosmetic changes soon after settling in, introducing a contemporary colour scheme and getting stuck into the back garden.

Five years later, they couldn’t be happier with their century-old beauty. Sarah tells us more.

How did you decide on the overall look?

We felt it was important to be sympathetic to the age and era of the house. We also acknowledged that as our kids Mia and Max grew older so would their style so we went a look that can easily be updated with a new duvet cover.

What part of the house are you happiest with?

The dining area was a treat when we hung the wallpaper, featuring a delicate lace pattern on a soft pale duck egg blue. We also recovered the window seats in a plush fabric and had pendant lights installed.

That was our favourite then, but since then we've renovated Mia’s bedroom, with built-in wardrobes and a gorgeous loft bed, it's become our favourite.

What's your advice for someone trying to achieve a similar look?

Firstly, live in a house for a while to get a good feel for it before you start renovating. What you think is a great idea when you first buy may not be the style or feel you want to go with long term.

Try to select tones with warmth to them, even if it is a shade of white, and keep your main palette neutral. You can add texture and colour with furnishings and objects you love.

Lastly, less is more – don’t overcrowd your spaces. Stick to clean lines and surfaces for a fresh look.

What was the biggest decorating, renovating or building challenge?

The pool in the backyard, which was installed last year – it was a major project and one that we hadn’t anticipated to have so many challenges. We love it now, of course.
