Rethinking pink and red walls
Pink and red is a divisive colour combo and can have homeowners scratching their heads on how to get it right. But when you do find the perfect pink and red combo, boy does it look beautiful.
Stylist Vanessa Nouwens has hit it out the park with this Resene Pohutukawa and Resene Dust Storm bedroom, combining two on-trend Resene colours to create a cosy, modern setting. Here’s why it works so well:
- Deep red and burgundies work well in this part of the world, particularly in our strong natural light, and also remind us of the pohutukawa and rata flowers. They also really suit feature walls or as accents, particularly reds with a blue or cool base as they are e`asier to live with.
- The combination of wine red and soft pink might be feminine but, in this case, it’s also very sophisticated – deep wine red is a colour of the moment, after all. And the duskiness of Resene Dust Storm hits all the right notes in today’s trending colours.
- To counteract the richness of the red walls, there are three elements at play here: a circle headboard, which brings a soft, organic feel to the walls (as opposed to the hardness of geo patterns); the use of dusky Resene Dust Storm for the circle, a lighter colour in keeping with the tones; and a floor painted in antique white Resene Double Rice Cake, giving balance to the richness of the wall.
Working with reds
Using other colours to help break up the strength of reds is easy to do:
- Classic creams with a soft warm base (not cool whites) support the richness in wine reds yet add visual relief – they are great for trims and ceilings. Try Resene Half Pearl Lusta or Resene Quarter Spanish White.
- Mid to dark lavender greys add a cool counterpoint (the grey) but help to create what is called a ‘related’ colour scheme where colours that sit next to each other in the colour wheel, in this case red and purple, harmonise. Deep bruised greys, such as Resene Gun Powder and mid-tone mauve greys work well (try Resene Santas Grey).
- Dusty browns add a more serious, masculine note to a red wine scheme, used as an accent or as a dusky stained timber floor or pieces of furniture – try Resene Half Colins Wicket or Resene Doeskin.
- Green helps cool a red scheme. Go with either a deep green shade (try Resene Karaka), or a pale khaki green such as Resene Aspiring for a contemporary look.
- Go for dark, almost black, colours of any type from deep charcoal (try Resene Double Cod Grey) and inky blue to licorice, such as Resene Licorice, and burnt brown/black.
- Ochre, mustard, and rich gold such as Resene Rusty Nail, Resene Moroccan Spice and Resene FX Metallic Gold Dust add a glamorous note.

Rich Resene Pohutukawa walls are softened by a circle painted bedhead. Blue-based, burgundy reds are less energetic than tomato reds, making it more serene for bedrooms. A floor painted in Resene Double Rice Cake is also a great balance to the rich walls. The bedside table is painted in Resene Sakura, the vase is painted in Resene Sauvignon.

This feature wall idea is also perfect for adding colour to an under-utilised space you may have in the home, turning it into a glamorous reading nook. Complement the ResenePohutukawa walls with tonal accessories, and don’t be afraid to throw smoky greys into the mix, such as the side table painted in Resene Foundry. The velvet egg chair is a great accompaniment to the scheme, with its roundness an echo to the part circle painted on the wall in Resene Dust Storm. The floors are painted in Resene Double Rice Cake.

Resene Pohutukawa provides a sophisticated backdrop for this makeup table, with a stripe of dusky Resene Dust Storm up top. The table, painted in Resene Sakura, creates an ombre effect, in keeping with the pink and red tones. Providing a pop of contrast, a chair and mirror have been painted in Resene Sauvignon, a very pale pink. With floors painted in Resene Double Rice Cake and a deep, red wine-coloured hat, there’s a beautiful harmony of colour.
Accessories: Ladies Wide Brim Ever After Hat in Wine, Lipon Snake Gold Eco Metallic Shoes, Hazel tassel necklace, Athena Necklace and Houston Crystal Necklace from Shut The Front door. Rogue Rose Peony bouquet from Freedom Furniture. Girl Undiscovered Gold Bag, Under the Waterfall Crystal Cleansing Water, Stars Aligning Face Elixir Oil and Stumbled Across Paradise Face Mask from Girl Undiscovered.
The look works well for teenagers, also, making a beautiful study area with pops of colour – following the same colour scheme of Resene Dust Storm (top) and Resene Pohutukawa walls, table painted in Resene Sakura and floors painted in Resene Double Rice Cake. The chair and tall vase are painted in Resene Sauvignon.
Accessories: Blush Peony Impression Artwork from Adairs. Bunch of faux peonies from Kmart.
Only a few tweaks are needed to turn this into a more grown up, pared-back space – from an oversized print joining the striped wall colours in Resene Dust Storm (top) and Resene Pohutukawa, to a marble lamp sitting on the table painted in Resene Sakura. The chair is painted in Resene Sauvignon and the floor is painted in Resene Double Rice Cake.
Accessories: Marmo Marble Table lamp, Home & Co Decorative Sand Timer and Large Floral Print from Kmart.
A floral theme blooms in this scheme, supported by Resene Double Rice Cake (background), Resene Sauvignon (vase and tealight holder) and A4 painted samples, from top, in Resene Sakura, Resene Sauvignon and Resene Pohutukawa.
