Elysian Du Regent: A heritage masterpiece revitalised

09 Dec 2024

Nestled in Christchurch’s historic theatre district, Elysian Du Regent is more than just boutique accommodation. Located at 1 New Regent Street, this revitalised property pays homage to its storied past while creating a luxurious and tranquil retreat for travellers. Designed by interior designer Alexandra Blair, the project masterfully combines heritage architecture, thoughtful design and Resene’s sophisticated colour palette to craft a space that reflects both history and contemporary elegance.

New Regent Street, with its vibrant 92-year history, has been a hub of activity since its inception in 1932. Once home to circuses, skating rinks and even Christchurch’s first picture theatre, this Spanish Mission-style street has long been celebrated for its charm. Inspired by an early promotional brochure from the 1930s titled TheRomance of New Regent Street, Alexandra sought to restore the building’s connection to its historic roots while making it relevant for modern-day travellers.

The walls are painted in a custom Resene white – a chalky, timeless hue, with trims, detailing and ceiling in Resene Half Merino

The stairwell balustrade is painted in the dark shade of Resene Element, contrasting beautifully with the custom made Resene white paint on the walls and ceiling and trims in Resene Half Merino. The stairwell features a subtle striped pattern with Resene Wallpaper Collection 515312.

The property owners envisioned Elysian Du Regent as a “heavenly, blissful boutique retreat” that provides luxury and local culture amidst Christchurch’s bustling theatre district. This vision guided every design decision, from heritage-compliant exterior finishes to the serene, Parisian-inspired interiors.

When it came to designing the exterior, this heritage-listed building required careful adherence to established guidelines. Resene Lumbersider Low Sheen was chosen for its durability, with the main walls painted in Resene Nepal and architectural details highlighted in Resene Escapade and Resene Altitude. These hues respect the building’s heritage while harmonising with the vibrant streetscape.

Resene Nepal painted on exterior walls offers a gentle welcoming feel to the building while Resene Escapade and Resene Altitude highlight details and add to the tonal blue scheme.

Internally, Alexandra faced the challenge of transforming spaces previously painted black, which had created a closed-off, gloomy atmosphere. Resene’s custom colour blends and meticulously chosen finishes brought the space to life.

The walls are painted in custom Resene chalky tones to evoke a restful, Parisian apartment feel. A soft white defines the main living and kitchen areas, while a biscuit tone in the bedroom suite complements the adjoining bathroom tiles, creating a cohesive flow. Resene Half Merino highlights heritage detailing around arched doors and windows, drawing attention to the colourful, quirky neighbourhood views. The ceiling is also painted in Resene Half Merino in a flat finish, to brighten the space and emphasise the airy design.

The staircase balustrade and French double doors were painted in Resene Element, a deep hue that adds sophistication and pairs seamlessly with bronze accents. The stairwell also features Resene Wallpaper Collection 515312 from the Resene Trianon XIII Wallpaper Collection – an ode to France and chic Parisian details.

In the bedroom, the custom biscuit beige creates a dreamy atmosphere, while the ceiling and trims brighten the space, highlighted in Resene Half Merino. The door is painted in Resene Element

The doors are painted in Resene Element, a stunning contrast against the custom Resenewhite hue on the walls and Resene Half Merino on trims.

Heritage projects often come with unexpected hurdles, and Elysian Du Regent was no exception. The original 1932 structure presented surprises during the build, while planning and consent requirements added complexity. However, the collaborative efforts of builder Jeff Steel and the Homebase Construction team ensured the project’s success.

The bathroom features jewel-toned light pendants with earthy tiles and striking décor. The ceiling, trims and door are painted in Resene Half Merino.

Elysian Du Regent seamlessly blends history and luxury, offering a tranquil haven that invites guests to connect with the city’s vibrant culture. From the elegant interiors to the thoughtfully curated colour palette, every detail contributes to a space that is both inviting and memorable.

Whether for a romantic escape, a peaceful retreat, or a cultural getaway, Elysian Du Regent offers an experience that honours Christchurch’s past while embracing modern comfort. For bookings or to explore more, visit www.elysianduregent.co.nz.
