The art of kitchen colour: Six designs to inspire your dream kitchen
Kitchens are no longer just functional spaces, they’re a canvas for self-expression, where colour brings life to every corner. Whether you’re drawn to timeless neutrals or bold hues, Resene offers a palette to suit every style. From classic Hamptons charm to playful pops of colour, these kitchens are perfect examples of how a well-chosen hue can transform your culinary space.
Taupe notch style
In this classic, charming kitchen, the cabinets are painted in Resene Quarter Taupe Grey, a sleek touch of taupe lightened with a hint of ochre. The ceiling is painted in Resene White. Project by Charlotte Minty, image by Andy Spain.
In this timeless kitchen Resene Quarter Taupe Grey breathes subtle sophistication into the cabinetry. Paired with Resene White on the ceiling, the space feels airy and elegant. Get a similar look by using neutrals like Resene Truffle, Resene Lemon Grass or Resene Ash on the cabinetry, paired with whites like Resene Sea Fog and Resene White Pointer on ceiling and trims.
Tip: To really spruce up your kitchen and make your new cabinetry colour pop, consider painting the handles in a contrasting shade like black Resene Nero, or gold Resene FX Metallic Gold Dust.
True blue-tiful
This eco-home is clean and stunning combining a refreshing mix of colour and elegance. The walls are painted in Resene Blue Jeans, with ceiling and cabinetry in Resene Wan White. Project and image by Rachel Covey.
This kitchen effortlessly combines refreshing blues with clean whites. Resene Blue Jeans brings a cool and calming effect to the walls, while the cabinetry and ceiling in Resene Wan White add a light, natural feel. The gold fixtures and stools top off this design, adding a touch of luxury and warmth to the cool space. Pairblues like ReseneBali Hai, Resene Blue Moon and ReseneWaikawa Greywith ReseneBlack White or Resene Alabaster for a fresh, balanced finish.
Biscotti bliss
This dreamy kitchen has touches of modern industrial mixed with classic Hamptons. The cohesive look carries through this home with walls painted in Resene Half Biscotti and ceiling in Resene Half Black White.Project by Melanie Gould, image by Rachel Hadfield.
With a mix of modern and traditional influences, this kitchen is the perfect blend of style. The warm neutral Resene Half Biscotti and wooden elements bring a sense of cosy farmhouse, while Resene Half Black White on the ceiling adds a crisp, contemporary finish. For other scrumptious beige hues, try Resene Eighth Canterbury Clay, Resene Quarter Joss or Resene Quarter Malta. These look wonderful paired with décor and furniture in Resene Colorwood wood stains in warm, soft hues like Resene Natural, Resene Whitewash and Resene Bask.
Top tip: If you’re not sure what colours and textures work well together, try creating a mood board. Collect paint samples, wallpaper samples and colour cards from your local Resene ColorShop, and mix and match them with other samples like fabrics and tiles until you get the look you’re after.
Soothe the mood
The soft tone of Resene Soothe on this kitchen cabinetry offers the perfect contrast to the black joinery. Both of these shades are complemented by the timeless white of Resene Black White on the walls and ceiling.Project by Emma Brown, image by Avodah Photo + Cinema.
The dusty umber-pink hue of Resene Soothe contrasts beautifully against the sleek black joinery in this kitchen. Finding colours from opposite ends of the colour wheel can be a great way of defining a space. This designer has created a harmonious design by placing florals and décor in similar hues around the space, along with simple and elegant fixtures.
Black works well with almost any shade. If you’re into pinks like this kitchen, try shades that are calming and soft like Resene Soothe, Resene Ebb and Resene Wafer. If you want pale blues, try Resene Quarter Frozen or Resene Breathless. And for barely there greens, try Resene Ottoman and Resene Harp.
Blossoming fun
This playful kitchen features Resene Apple Blossom on the pantry and integrated fridge, Resene Tom Thumb on drawers and Resene Wan White on the walls and ceiling.Project by Alex Fulton, image by Simon Devitt.
Alex Fulton’s design brings playful colour to her kitchen with a soft terracotta red and a smoky grey green. The white walls and ceiling allow her colour choices to pop and really stand out. Not everyone is keen to go all out with colour in their kitchen, but if you need an injection of colour, try starting with just one part, such as the cupboard or drawers. For a fun twist like this kitchen, try a quirky green like Resene Wasabi, a Victorian rose like Resene Vintage or a violet blue like Resene Enigma.
Oui, chef!
In this French country-style kitchenthe tongue-and-groove walls are painted in Resene Emerge and the cabinets, ceiling, architraves and sculleryare in Resene Quarter Rice Cake. The open island table is based off a design Kirsty saw online. The counter is stained in ReseneColorwood Dark Ebony and protected with ReseneDanska Teak Oil. Project by David Wraight Cottages, image by Juliet Nicholas.
A French farmhouse kitchen is the perfect blend of timeless elegance and cosy, lived-in charm. The muted colour palette in this design, combined with natural textures and traditional design elements, creates a space that feels both sophisticated and welcoming. This kitchen embodies these traits with soft pastel tones, vintage-inspired cabinetry and a balance of modern functionality with classic farmhouse aesthetics.
The farmhouse aesthetic thrives on personal touches, such as fresh flowers, rustic signs and vintage-inspired light fixtures, which all add charm and character to the space, but it also comes down to your colour choices. Try using soft, pastel tones like Resene Duck Egg Blue and Resene Edward or steel blues like Resene Bounty and Resene Bluff. Paired with creamy whites you’ll have that ‘cottagecore’ space you’ve always dreamed of!
