Crate-ing space: A DIY farmers’ market stand

12 Jun 2024

If you’re a little short of space in your pantry, or maybe you have a blank wall in your kitchen and not sure what to do with it, then this cute farmers market stand could be just the thing you need! If you choose to paint your crates green like we did, then make the most of Resene’s Paint It Green campaign. Throughout June you can buy any Resene green 60 mL testpot at your local Resene ColorShop (NZ) and Resene will donate $1 to Trees That Count.

You will need:

  • 1x piece of MDF backing board, 1.2m long, 60cm wide and 1cm thick
  • 2x pieces of pine, 1.2m long, 4cm wide and 1cm thick
  • 2x pieces of pine, 52cm long, 4cm wide and 1cm thick (these are for the top and bottom trim)
  • 3x wooden crates
  • Screws
  • Wood glue
  • Wooden letters to spell Farmers market (you could paint the letters too)
  • Resene testpots in your favourite shades. We used Resene Dell, Resene Travertine, Resene Paddock and Resene Rivergum

Step 1: Paint your base board in your chosen background colour. We used Resene Travertine. You will need two coats of paint for best coverage.

Step 2: Paint your pine trim and wooden letters in your chosen Resene colour. We used Resene Seaweed.

Step 3: Paint your crates in three of your chosen Resene colours – or you can do them all the same colour if you like. We used Resene Seaweed, Resene Paddock and Resene Rivergum.

Step 4: Glue your trim pieces to the backing board using wood glue.

Step 5: Glue your painted letters to the board, screw your crates to the backing board evenly spaced out on the board and screw this to the wall. Add your produce and market goodies, enjoy.
