Bathing in colour bliss

Two bathrooms, both painted in rich Resene colour and each boasting an individual style. When it came to creating these beautiful bathrooms, the designers went bold with their colour choices and the results speak for themselves. They share the inspiration behind their designs.

Luxury in blue

With a palette of soft Resene blues, lustrous brass fittings and whimsical French-like touches, this bathroom designed by Natalie Du Bois of Du Bois Design is a luxurious take on a kids’ bathrooms.

The bathroom is shared by a brother and sister, and for this design Natalie brought a balance of masculine and feminine elements through colour and design.

Deep blue Resene Avalanche on the bath tub and vanity brings a masculine touch, along with pale grey Resene Half Mountain Mist on the tongue and groove panelling.

Meanwhile, elements such as Perrin and Rowe brass tapware and curvaceous forms of the vanity provide a feminine balance.

And for a childlike spin, a fantail decal by Antony Clark sits above the bath tub. It can be peeled off as the children get older.

The biggest challenge of the reno was the bathroom’s location, above a stairwell. This meant that some of the floor had to be raised to allow for the ceiling below.

Natalie has ‘hidden’ the raised area within two storage cabinets, one of which is accessed from the bathroom, and the other from the boy’s bedroom. A new doorway was also created off the hallway to allow both children access to the bathroom.

To give the room a sense of space, Natalie chose a frameless shower stall for the bathroom, as well as a bathtub with legs. It’s also heightened by walls above the tongue and groove painted in Resene Milk White and a ceiling painted in Resene Eighth Milk White.

Did you know… that the Resene Kitchen & Bathroom range combines anti-bacterial silver protection and MoulDefender to minimise unwanted nasties in kitchens, bathrooms and laundries? Available in white and off whites. Use Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen or Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss for darker colours.

Grey and gorgeous

With a 3.6m high ceiling, walls painted in Resene Raven stretching to the top and matai timber floors below, the elegance of this ensuite by Wellington architect Clare Bush is unmistakable.

It’s one of three bathrooms in her renovated home, which all share a colour scheme of black, grey and white, brick-laid subway tiles and simple aesthetic design.

For the ensuite’s colour scheme, Clare used Resene Raven as the main colour, a timeless grey with a twist of blue. “I like that while it’s neutral, it’s also just on the edge of being a colour,” she says. The ceiling and trim are painted in classic Resene Double Alabaster.

As a counter balance to the long lines of the full-width wall-hung oak vanity, Clare has introduced circular and curved elements such as a large round mirror and globe-shaped lighting.

When it comes to renovating bathrooms, Clare’s advice is to choose durable fittings, like porcelain. “And not everything in a bathroom needs to be tiled,” she says.

The renovation of the villa was completed last year and won a top spot in the Master Builders House of the Year awards as National Supreme Renovation for building company Planit Construction.
